not just Instagram likes

The Ten-Second Problem

Why most submissions are passed over in under ten seconds

Most agency submissions are reviewed in under ten seconds. Not because agencies don’t care, but because they’re scanning for clarity: the right image types, clean digitals, proportions, and presence visible at a glance. If your portfolio doesn’t show that immediately, you’re overlooked. Not because of your look. Because of the photos.

That’s the gap this exists to close.

Agency Submission Standards

What modelling agencies look for

Agencies aren’t looking for creativity in a submission. They’re looking for clarity. Specifically:

  • Clean, natural digitals that show your face and proportions without distraction
  • Minimal styling: they need to see you, not the wardrobe
  • Consistency across the set, so they can read your range without guessing
  • Presence, not posing: expression that feels grounded rather than performed

If you want the full breakdown, I’ve written about exactly what goes into an agency-standard digitals set here.

Full Usage Rights Included

Your images, your career, your control. Use them anywhere, forever – no licensing restrictions.

02

Full Professional Edit

Portfolio Selects

Your versatile working portfolio — editorial range, lifestyle, fashion. Full frame variety per look: head & shoulders, close-up, three-quarter, full length, and environmental. Fully edited, ready to submit.

03

magazine-standard retouch

Hero Retouches

The best images from your session, fully retouched to magazine standard. These anchor your agency submissions and lead your Instagram grid. Enhanced, never altered.

How I Run Sessions

Before I picked up a camera professionally, I spent twenty-two years in corporate roles at Microsoft and Google, and a decade as a technical diving instructor guiding people through environments that don’t forgive mistakes. Both of those jobs are about the same thing: preparing people properly, communicating clearly, and staying calm when someone else is nervous. Portrait sessions work the same way.

I shoot in a dedicated studio, not a residential space. You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member. Direction is verbal: I’ll tell you what to do with your poses, I won’t reach in and adjust you. I’m a father of two daughters, and I run this business the way I’d want any photographer my daughters worked with to run theirs.

The Professional Difference

Why corporate background matters in creative work

22 years at Microsoft and Google taught me something the creative industry often misses: clarity reduces anxiety, process builds confidence, and results matter more than aesthetics alone.

  • Clear communication at every stage — you’ll never wonder what happens next
  • Portfolio strategy, not just beautiful images — we discuss how to use what we create
  • Professional boundaries as standard — studio location, clear direction, respectful environment
  • Results-focused approach — images designed to open doors, not just fill Instagram
  • Full usage rights included — your images, your career, complete control
“I’ve worked with photographers who made beautiful images but had no idea how to help me use them. Nick understood my goals before we even got to the studio.”
— Kirsty · Melbourne model

Common Questions

Everything you want to ask
before booking

Most clients book their First Reveal as their first professional shoot. I’ll direct every pose clearly. Many of the strongest portfolios in my gallery belong to people who were nervous on shoot day — nerves don’t show in the images when you’re properly directed.

Every session in The Reveal Collection includes three types of images, each serving a different purpose. Agency Digitals are the clean, minimal-edit images that bookers and agents use to assess your natural look — these are what agencies need to see in any submission. Portfolio Selects are your fully edited working images across multiple looks, showing your range from commercial to editorial — these are what agencies put on their website and send to clients. Hero Retouches are your magazine-standard images with full professional retouching for hero placements, comp cards, and social media. All three packages include a pre-shoot video strategy call where we plan your looks and shot list, 90% photographer-led direction on shoot day, and full personal and commercial usage rights on every image — no ongoing licensing fees, no restrictions on where you use them.

At Premier Portraits, model portfolio sessions start at $950 for The First Reveal, which includes 6 Agency Digitals, 14 Portfolio Selects across 2 looks, and 5 Hero Retouches — everything a first-time model needs for initial agency submissions. The Core Reveal is $1,450 and covers 3 looks with 24 Portfolio Selects and 10 Hero Retouches — this is the package most models book because it gives agencies the commercial and editorial range they need to see. The Signature Reveal is $2,200 and covers 4 or more looks with 30 Portfolio Selects and 15 Hero Retouches — designed for working models building a comprehensive book. All packages include full usage rights and a portfolio strategy call at delivery. Optional add-ons include professional hair and makeup, and Rapid Reveal Delivery at 5-7 days.

You’ll receive a detailed wardrobe guide when you book, plus a 10-question style quiz that generates a personalised look plan. In general: well-fitted clothes in neutral or muted tones, minimal prints. Bring options — we’ll refine together on the day.

Absolutely — and you don’t need to explain why. Having someone there can make the whole experience easier, especially for a first shoot. They can sit in or watch from a comfortable distance — whatever helps you feel most at ease.

Each type serves a different purpose. Agency Digitals are the standard clean set bookers use to assess your look — minimal editing, natural. Portfolio Selects are your versatile working images across different looks — fully edited. Hero Retouches are the best images from your session, fully retouched to magazine standard — the ones that lead your submissions and your grid.

Melbourne agencies want to see three things: that you photograph well under professional conditions, that you have range across different looks and styles, and that your digitals are clean enough to send directly to clients. Agencies like Vivien’s, Chadwick, and Giant assess your bone structure, proportions, and how light works on your face from your Agency Digitals — these need to be natural, minimal editing, shot in controlled lighting. Your Portfolio Selects show whether you can shift between commercial warmth and editorial edge, which determines the types of jobs an agency can put you forward for. The images don’t need to be perfect — agencies sign potential, not finished products — but they do need to be professionally shot under proper lighting with consistent quality. Phone photos, heavily filtered images, and cropped group shots won’t get you through the door regardless of how good your look is.

You’ll look like the best version of yourself — natural skin tones, real texture, no liquifying or body alteration. Agencies need to recognise you from your digitals. Heavy editing works against you at the submission stage. Enhanced, never altered is the rule.

Standard delivery is 10–14 days. If you need images urgently — for a submission deadline or agency meeting — the Rapid Reveal Delivery add-on delivers your full gallery in 5–7 days for an additional $400.

A 50% deposit secures your date, with the balance due 7 days before shoot day. Pay in full upfront and save $50–100. Afterpay is also accepted — no judgment, just options.

The Core Reveal is the right starting point for most models — it gives you the full commercial and fashion range agencies need to see, at a price that makes the investment realistic. Book a free 15-minute call, and I’ll help you decide based on your specific goals and timeline.

Premier Portraits is founded by Nick Schoeffler, a former Microsoft and Google executive who brings 22 years of corporate strategy to creative photography. Nick is also a trained editorial stylist through the Australian Style Institute and a Global Underwater Explorers technical diving instructor — a background that combines professional discipline with creative direction. That mix of corporate rigour and creative experience is why sessions run on time, briefs are followed precisely, and the images you receive are built around your career goals rather than a photographer’s artistic preferences.

Before You Book

Read deeper

If you want more depth before booking, I’ve written about what goes into an agency-standard digitals set, why most modelling portfolios don’t get the result the model expected, and what actually happens inside an agency submission review. They’re written for the same person this page is written for, and they’ll tell you whether what I do is the right fit.
